Embroidery

Embroidery is one of the oldest forms of decoration, but the method of doing embroidery has changed over the years. Machine embroidery takes over from the original hand embroidery in the current climate.  Although the traditional hand embroidery is still used in many craft type functions. Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as pearls, beads, quills, and sequins.

These days, embroidery is usually seen on:

  • caps
  • hats
  • coats
  • blankets
  • dress shirts
  • denim
  • dresses

Some of the basic techniques or stitches of the earliest embroidery are called

  • chain stitch
  • buttonhole or blanket stitch
  • running stitch
  • satin stitch
  • cross stitch

These stitches remain the fundamental techniques of hand embroidery even these days.

Screen Printing

Screen printing is a printing technique where a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a material, except in areas that are blocked with a stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the material momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the material and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multicoloured image or design, so this may incur high setup charges.

There are various terms used for what is essentially the same technique. Traditionally, the process was called screen printing or silkscreen printing because silk was used in the process. It is also known as serigraphy, and serigraph printing. Currently, synthetic threads (polyester) are commonly used in the screen printing process. There are special-use mesh materials of nylon and stainless steel available to screen printers. There are also different types of mesh size which determines the outcome and look of the finished design on the material.
